I have been thinking about symptoms today, and balance and being out of balance and what it all means. The theory that makes the most sense to me is that emotions and physical symptoms are part of the same continuum, and they are just signposts pointing us to something primary that we need.

Emotions are the first wake-up call we have that we are out of balance. Since the purpose of them is to make us listen, if we do not, they become more powerful, and we get more uncomfortable. If we suppress them, we experience depression.

If we still do not listen to them something else kicks in. The part of us that needs something says okay, she/he is not listening to emotions, so let us try something else. How about aches and pains? Read the rest of this entry…

I love to eat out. I live in a tourist town which means there are many restaurants to choose from. I’ve had many people ask me how I can maintain a healthy weight eating out as often I do.

There are several things you can do when eating out to help maintain a healthy weight and even lose weight if you are currently trying to lose weight.

1. Alcoholic beverages and sodas are very high in calories. When I go out I almost always have either water or iced tea. While I don’t care for sweetener in my tea, there are many sugar substitutes that do not have the calories of sugar. Many people are not aware that even lemonade is very high in calories. If your favorite part of a cruise isn’t gaining weight during your time at sea, maybe you need to take a new look at your attitude toward the ‘all you can eat’ part. It’s human nature to want to take advantage when something is being offered for nothing–after all, it costs you the same whether you eat 1000 calories a day or 5000 calories a day, right? But think about how you feel after having gotten your ‘money’s worth’. It could end up costing you in many ways later on. Weight gain increases risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer.
